(Reclaimed Souls Volume 2)

The Queen of Scarred Hearts is the second installment in the four-volume epic journey of Rahda and Roland in a heart pounding blend of romance, fantasy, science fiction, and adventure — perfect for fans of Kushiel’s Dart, Cruel Beauty, Graceling, and Sea of Shadows.

Caught in a web between the opposing rulers of Izkirka and Aschalle, Rahda struggles to accept her newfound title as Lady Sevradan while reconciling her former life as a prized disciple and assassin.

Before she can come to terms with the new arrangement, once-buried secrets and a renewed threat sends her fleeing the palace. As she wades ever deeper in royal and political intrigue, and as a royal coup simmers just beneath the surface, Rahda’s not sure who is friend or foe.

But with Roland, things are never quite so simple as the tension between them flares white-hot and out of control, even as Rahda is suspicious of the darkness hiding in the depths of his eyes. However, once she discovers what Roland has kept hidden, she is forced to confront the future, her true feelings, and whether or not her scarred prince has a place in her life, and in her heart.

The Queen of Scarred Hearts, the second installment in the Reclaimed Souls Series, will have readers asking themselves, “Who Owns Your Heart?”

New Release! THE PALE WATERS, # 1 of the Reclaimed Souls Series.

The Pale Waters begins the four-volume epic journey of Rahda and Roland in a heart-pounding blend of romance, fantasy, science fiction, and adventure, perfect for fans of Kushiel’s Dart, Cruel Beauty, Graceling, and Sea of Shadows.

Summoned by Izkirka’s mysterious ruler, class-zero citizen Rahda clashes with Prince Roland Rexus in a battle of lies, secrets, and seduction. She’s been sent to kill him, he knows it, and, strangely enough, he does nothing to actively stop her.

But once she’s in the presence of the man who everyone calls a dark prince, everything begins to unravel. The disfigured prince has his own reasons for summoning the woman meant to kill him; reasons that will alter Rahda’s perception of the world around her. Within a matter of days, she’s thrust into an unfamiliar society with an untrustworthy prince, and becomes involved in a war she never knew existed.

Rahda’s no longer sure where she fits in when she uncovers the truth about Roland, and about herself.

Three Year Anniversary

Photo of Kelly WashingtonA little over three years ago, January 16, 2012 to be exact, I published my first short story, Smolder, on the Amazon KDP platform.

I was testing the waters and since then, I haven’t looked back.

While Smolder isn’t my best, it paved the way for other stories, and gave me the confidence to write what I wanted, when I wanted, and how I wanted.

No rules. No deadlines (except those self-imposed). There was nothing to stop me from writing whatever came into my mind.

And do you know what most often comes into my mind, after romance? Scars… flaws… interesting characters… flawed but interesting characters.

After writing a trio of short stories–Smolder, Captive, and Ignite Me–a new character came into being: Staff Sergeant Justin Hauten. With him came Nebraska, the ultimate sidekick, and then, Justin’s love interest, Lieutenant Aaron Parris.

A gay romance.

The wonderful thing about being a writer is that, in my mind, I often live the lives of other people. Other made-up people. I had no difficulties in imagining Justin and Aaron’s romance. And to be honest, Nebraska practically wrote himself. He was way too much fun to ignore.

Falling For Him turned into a three-volume novella set that I wrote and published toward the end of 2012, and into early 2013. It was with this series that I met my editor, Susan.

And things progress. My writing improves and I have readers reading me! Me! Little ‘ole Kelly Washington!!!

In all of 2013 I wrote what I call an epic fantasy-romance series that’s well over 800 pages long. It literally took me a full year to write it and I published the first novella in Nov 2013, and each book a month or so afterwards, in to early 2014.

But it didn’t sell well. Was it the covers? The blurb? The actual story? I’m not sure. So, right now, even though I wrote Reclaimed Souls in 2013, I am working to repackage the series, pull it under my Kelly Washington name (it is currently published under a pen name of Della Roth) and I have four shiny, brand-new covers from the amazing cover artist James T. Egan ( I look forward to re-publishing this series in 2015.

Also in 2014, I wrote a new military-contemporary-romance, Collide Into You. I adore this genre and I firmly believe it is my best work to date. I published it exclusively with Amazon KDP between Oct 2014 and Jan 2015.

It did well, but nothing extraordinary. During the free days, I had a few thousand downloads, which thrilled me. But at the end of Jan 2015, I removed Collide Into You from Amazon’s exclusivity feature and, today, Feb 8, 2015, I am uploading the novel onto every other platform possible.

So look for Collide Into You on iTunes, B&N, Kobo, and ARe.

What’s in store for the rest of 2015?

I am currently writing the sequel to Collide Into You, titled (tentatively) Out Of Time. It focuses on Alec Huffman (the MLB Pitcher from Collide Into You) and his love interest, Army Captain Courtney Hall. At the time of the blog post, I am 1/3 through the first draft.

All in all, the last three years have been incredibly productive, illuminating, and wonderful. I went from writing one short story in 2012 to writing dozens of short stories and six novels since then. Not all of my work is published. Some of it is under contract with short story markets (magazines and anthologies). Other work (a novel or two) just aren’t ready to be published for a myriad of reasons, but mostly because they are not publish-ready.

I’m incredibly excited for 2015 and every year afterwards as I work toward my goal of writing full time. Many of you know that I have a day job working as a defense contractor for the US Army, and have been in this line of work for 19 years. It is very rewarding work and I’m proud of what I do, who I support, and I am honored to work alongside our military men and women.

I don’t know what the future holds (who does?) but what I DO KNOW is that I am very thankful to each and every one of you. For reading my work. For reviewing and telling others about it. For emailing me, asking when Alec’s story will be published. Most of you email me about Nebraska! One day, I promise, he will have his own story.

And what a crazy story it will be!

Much love!

Free is Better!

Lastly, the updates…

So, you want to know what I’m working on, do you?

I am hard at work on the sequel to Collide Into You. Alec Huffman (the delicious–and sweet–MLB pitcher from Collide Into You) gets his own story, which is tentatively titled Out Of Time. His leading lady is Captain Courtney Hall. She’s feisty, funny, sarcastic, and, maybe a little bit crazy. Oh, and she dismantles bombs for a living. Are you ready for the really crazy part? The “charm” in this story is that it is sort of a time-travel-story. Oh boy, do I have my work cut out for me on this one!!!

I can’t wait to get this story in your hands. I’m guessing it may be ready at the end of Spring 2015. Fingers crossed!

In between writing Out Of Time, I will be focused on an Anthology Workshop that will allow me to work with some amazing magazine editors on stories ranging from Thrillers, Paranormal, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Western, and Young Adult. This workshop get’s my muse working in overdrive, and I enjoy it immensely.

Well… that’s it my lovelies. Have a lovely holiday season!

So, what’s the story about…? Here is the unofficial blurb:

Collide Into You: A Romantic Gender Swap Love Story

Love, by its very definition is disorder…

When twenty-seven year old Army Sergeant Keira Holtslander, an orderly and rule-loving intelligence analyst is reassigned to the Pentagon for a special assignment, she agrees to room with her brother’s best friend, Dillan Pope. But there’s a problem. Several, in fact. He’s sarcastic, egotistical, full of himself, extremely attractive, and a womanizer. Within a matter of days, her life is chaos. She didn’t like him when they met nine years ago and her opinion isn’t likely to change now.

Love… crashes around you…

Dillan Pope, a thirty year old career businessman climbing his way up the corporate ladder, has learned to use his looks, charm, and sexual skills to his advantage. There isn’t much he cannot accomplish. Women easily tumble into his bed and business deals come about effortlessly. But when his best friend’s little sister moves in, he knows he’s in trouble. She’s rather hostile toward him, which is not the reaction he’s used to. Dillan loves a challenge, and Keira, aka, Sergeant Prim and Proper, has always been the one girl he could never forget when they met nine years ago.

Love… blinds you…

When a meddling barista puts a charm on the roommates, causing them to swap bodies, they must live as each other until they can get back to normal. They quickly learn that panic, fighting and accusations will get them nowhere. Until they can “cure” the charm, they experience life as the other with hilarious results all the while realizing that maybe the other isn’t so bad.

Love… heals you…

Maybe there’s a reason they hated each other. And discovering the feelings that lay hidden may be the only way to undo the switch.

Kelly Washington’s new contemporary, military romance, written with a touch of magic, will make you laugh and believe in love all over again.

Oh, and guess what? My sexy heroes from FALLING FOR HIM, Justin, Aaron, and Nebraska are supporting characters in this book. Nebraska is up to his crazy antics (as usual) and you’ll get a glimpse of Justin and Aaron as a couple in the bowling scene.

Needless to say, I’m super excited about this story. It is fun, sexy, exciting, funny, and sweet. Collide Into You isn’t a steamy story and can be read by teens. I really hope you enjoy and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

Hugs, Kelly

Coming Soon: Print Version of “Falling For Him” and “Reclaimed Souls”

Hi everyone, and happy Sunday. In my house, Sundays are a cleaning day, or an errand day. Stuff like that. Generally I do not write on Sundays, but today I’m writing a post to let you know what I’ve been working on.

Print Versions of my books.

Yes, print, and I’m ecstatic about this.

Justin is a Hottie!

Oh my God, doesn’t Justin look amazing?!? And hot. And gorgeous. I’m bundling Falling For Him into one book, and I’m reviewing everything as we speak. Here’s a funny thing: when you read something in a different format, you find issues you might not have found originally (see below). For example, I write my novels on a Mac Laptop (using Scrivener), and convert everything for e-book conversions. After my editor has done her part, I make the necessary changes, conduct a final inspection, and press “publish”. Well, I’m finding that while reading my stories in paperback format, I see errors that I didn’t catch the first time. Oh My!

So I am making those edits as fast as I can to get you the option to read Falling For Him in paperback format. My guess is that I’ll have everything ready by late Summer 2014. Yay!

Reclaimed Souls - The Complete Series

Reclaimed Souls – The Complete Series

Here is a pic of Reclaimed Souls – The Complete Series in paperback format. This is one fat puppy because I’m working to reduce the page size in order to make it cheaper for you to buy it. Currently, I have it at 700 pages and I just don’t think I’ll be able to make it any smaller without reducing the font size, and I don’t want to do that. I’m still experimenting with everything, to include the cover, and hope to have the bundled series available early Fall 2014. Print and in E-Book version. Stay tuned.

A tidy little grouping

A tidy little grouping

As you can see here, I’ve adjusted the size of Justin’s – ahem – book. 🙂 The middle book was my first attempt, but it didn’t feel right in my hands, so I adjusted the paperback size to 5.5 x 8.5 (versus 6×9), and I like it a lot better.

Yikes! My red pen has come out!

Yikes! My red pen has come out!

It didn’t take me long to realize I would want to make changes. Not just editing issues (those are minor), but sentence structure and even dialog. I found a few instances where a bit more explanation was needed in the beginning of The Pale Waters (the first novella). One or two carefully crafted sentences will solve the issue.

In other news, I’m diligently working on my first draft of COLLIDING INTO YOU.

I suspect I’ll have the first draft done in a few weeks. While my hotties from Falling For You make appearances, the story centers on Keira (a sergeant in the Army) and Dillan (a junior business executive), and it is a stand-alone novel, meaning you will not need to read anything before it to get your romance-fix on. These two are just adorable, crazy, and get into such a scuffle (there’s a bit of magic in this story) that they must work everything out or risk their lives changing forever – and not in a way that they would want.

Secondary characters will, at some point, get their own stories. One of those secondary characters is a pro baseball player named Alec Huffman. He’s dreamy, sensitive, and totally unlike what his celebrity persona makes him out to be. I have an idea of who I want him to end up with, but my stories have been known to take over and go in a very different direction than I planned.

Keira’s brother (Jon – a Naval Officer) is in a serious relationship with Tanner (a pro baseball player) and while they are already a couple in Keira’s story, I have a feeling many of you will want me to write their M/M love story. So, at night, I’m dreaming up how they met, the problems they will face, and how they ended up together, because, on the surface, they do not seem like a logical couple. So, it should be fun.

I’d like to give a big shout-out to my girl, Chak. Have fun in Alexandria, VA. I am so going to miss you. Also, a big e-hug for Mary, Becky, and Deb. Thank you for agreeing to be my guinea pigs by reading COLLIDING INTO YOU after I’m done with the first draft.

To the rest of you guys and gals -my readers- keep those emails coming. I adore hearing from you. Here’s how I feel about you:Yum

Latest News

Lots to update you on. First, let me thank all of my readers for taking the time to read my stories and leaving kind reviews. It does funny things to my heart when I see that you like my stories. So, THANK YOU. I wish I could hug all of you! If you adore Justin, Nebraska, and Aaron (Falling For Him Series) as much as I do, please let other readers know. Word of mouth is still the best method for selling books, and I’m no exception.

Second, all four books in my Reclaimed Souls (under my Della Roth alias) have been published on all e-markets. A few sites haven’t updated (notably Kobo and iTunes) so I’ll work on that promptly. My next goal, for this series, is print on demand (bundle) as well as an e-bundle for all stories at an amazing price. Hopefully this will have readers picking up the entire series in one shot. A big thanks to my readers that have already picked up the entire set — piecemeal — and left kind words in the form of reviews and emails. Almost everyone that emails me has something amazingly wonderful to say about Roland. While the story was Rahda’s, Roland captured your hearts. Mine as well. Make sure you pick up the freebies associated with this series. Warning: the freebies are on the steamy (read: you’ll need a cool shower) side. You can find these stories here and here and here.

I’ve been a bit quiet on my blog. Sorry about that. My house flooded a few days after Mother’s Day and we’ve been working on that issue ever since. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty — it still isn’t — but things are slowly getting back to normal and we should have most of the repairs done by the end of next week. Fortunately, my writing productivity hasn’t dipped at all. Something about chaos opens my creative channel. I’ll post a few snippets of a novel I’m 1/2 through right now. Hint: it is in Justin’s world (military romance), though he, Aaron, and Nebraska only play minor supporting roles.

I’m still actively submitting my stories into Short Story magazines and e-zines (like Clarkesworld and Shimmer). Recently I received a very well received rejection from Tor. A positive rejection. I’m almost there. Also, in case you missed one of my earlier posts, I had a short story bought by FictionRiver for one of their upcoming anthologies. The anthology is called Recycled Pulp, edited by John Helfers. My story, called Prism of the Crab Gods, is about a boy who has to deal with a troubled upbringing. I wrote the story for a workshop, which John was present for, and he bought it on the spot. I brought many a reader to tears. Myself included. This anthology will not come out until December 2015. So you have a while before you can read this story. But I’m excited nonetheless.

On to my current work in progress (tentatively titled: Colliding Into You)… based on how far I’m into the story, and how much further I need to go, and editing, etc., I do not suppose this story will be ready for publication until late Fall 2014, or early Winter. The characters, Keira and Dillan (names subject to change!) are instant-roommates due to 1) Keira’s military reassignment to the Pentagon, and 2) Dillan (not in the military) is best friends with Keira’s brother, Jon, and he asks Dillan for a favor. A few things are apparent right away: Keira really doesn’t like Dillan, and Dillan is something of a player/playboy. Here is my opening scene. It’s a draft… so forgive all grammar errors.

“Wow,” a masculine voice says at me from across the living room. Not to me. At me. And he says the word “wow” in two syllables. Wow-Wa. It is my roommate, Dillan. Or, rather, I’m his new roommate. Did he always have to talk so sarcastically? I wait for his next comment. “Keira, whatever the opposite of amazing is, that’s how you look today.”

I look down at what I’m wearing, which is my Army Combat Uniform, or ACUs, for short. My hair is pulled up in a low bun and, in the interest of time, I’m wearing pretty much zero make-up. I look exactly like what a twenty-seven year old sergeant in the Army is supposed to look like: like every other female sergeant in the Army.

I’m fairly close to being late for my first day at the Pentagon and the last thing I need is for the man-slut I’m rooming with to harass me. I don’t care that he’s my brother’s best friend, or that I’ve only heard great things about him, or that his abs are to-die-for and that looking at him is like looking directly at the sun.

Look away, Keira! Those abs will totally blind you.

The only reason I’m here is because my brother, Jon, asked Dillan to let me stay here while Jon is deployed to Bahrain. Plus, I needed a quick place to live once I realized the Army had reassigned me to Washington, DC.

Dillan, shirtless and drying his hair, stands just outside his bedroom door. His wide-open bedroom door. Beyond him I can see a naked female form sleeping on his bed. She’s blond, leggy, and those are totally fake breasts.

I barely know my roommate and already don’t like him. I’m glad that the living room separates our two bedrooms. I seriously don’t want to hear sounds coming from his room at night. Not after what I heard yesterday.

I’m tired of trying to not look at Dillan, so I glance out the window. I still cannot believe that I’m living in a high-rise apartment with an amazing view of the Capitol, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial. Too bad it came with a man-slut.

I try to figure out what Dillan’s talking about when his lips curve in a victorious manner. I’ve been silent too long after the insult.

“What?” I ask, tilting my head. “Are you not used to women being clothed in front of you? Perhaps you’re not exactly sure how buttons and all those crazy little fastening thingies work? Listen, can we insult each other later? I’ve got to catch the metro.”

He grins as he reaches for a shirt of his own, a blue collared shirt, and purposefully buttons it up slowly, as if to illustrate that, yes, he knows how to dress himself. What an accomplishment, I think. Whatever will he do next? Use his finger to pick his nose?

I smile at the juvenile thought.

Dillan crosses the distance between us as he tucks the shirt into tailored pants. He cleans up nicely. I know he isn’t some bum. He works at a prestigious firm as some big-wig’s senior executive assistant. Let me clarify. That big-wig boss is a woman. And if I’ve learned anything about Dillan Pope in the two days I’ve been his roommate and all the stories Jon has told me over the last few years, it’s that Dillan can charm anyone.
Myself excluded, of course. I find something unattractive about overly-attractive men. I’ve always been this way.

My roommate clears his throat as if he has some big announcement. I roll my eyes and look at my watch. Hint, hint, buddy.

“I was just going to say that you looked much better this morning after you came in from your run,” he says in a low voice. I study his chiseled jaw, his light green eyes, and his dark hair. Not that I was smelling him or anything, but he smells like Sandalwood.

My run? That was two hours ago. “Can you please make sense, Devon?”

“It’s Dillan, but you already knew that. Don’t act like I don’t affect you. I mean,” he shrugs, “I really don’t care one way or the other. You’re not my type.” He slips on his shoes and folds his suit jacket over his arm and turns to go. “But, for the record, Sergeant Holtslander,” he says with a smirk. “I certainly like the little running outfit a whole hell of a lot better than whatever that”—he motions his hands up and down—“shapeless uniform is called.”

He winks as he leaves the apartment.

I stare at the closed door and wonder, not for the first time in the last thirty-six hours, what have I gotten myself into?

Before I go, I’ll share a photo (a selfie, really) of me and my son right after he became a Wolf in our Cub Scout pack. At the end of the day, I’m a mom. A proud mom. And I’m so blessed that I cannot express it adequately. Until next time, my friends… – Kelly –

Shiny, Pretty Things

Come see the shiny, pretty new things I’ve been working on! (Hint: new covers for my Reclaimed Souls Series). Long story short, I retired the Jean 8. Aeglothecca pen-name, and took on Della Roth.

Time For Some Math (or, the post where I discuss sales)

January 2014 Earnings [& Expenses] Report

I’m starting a new topic on my website that details my monthly earning report. Everything in this post is as true as I know it to be, and is as true as my situation warrants. My goal is to show you a little bit of what happens behind the scenes. It’s not always exciting, but I’ve enjoyed the process thus far.

I’ve been earning money for my writing for a little over three years now, but I’ve been a writer for twenty-six years. I mention this only to give you an idea of my age and to also showcase that while I am a seasoned writer, I am relatively new at self-publishing. I adore having complete control over everything—the covers, my editor (love you, girl!), and, overall, my own schedule.

Right now I am only a part-time writer. My sales will reflect this. I have a full-time job and I am, at this time, the sole earner for my family. I also live in the Washington DC area, and this is a high cost of living area. I’m blessed in the fact that I have a wonderfully paying job and I can afford to pay—out of pocket—for the expenses related to writing (namely, editing is the costliest) with the thought that this is an investment for the future. Yes… my ultimate goal is to become a full-time writer, but this will take many years and I am completely comfortable with this. I consider myself a professional. I care about my writing. I care about the work I put out there. I also care about longevity (the long tail) and I’m not interested in making a quick buck. I care very much about my readership!!

Before I go forward and tell you what I EARNED, I need to tell you what I SPENT in order to earn royalties. As an entrepreneur and one that has complete control over her work, it also means that I have to pay for the services I use (covers, editing) —

January 2014 saw a few publications for me

1)   Falling For Him (The Complete Series) (Kelly Washington)

  • This is a bundle/complete package of 1) Falling For You, 2) Hungry For You, and 3) Ready For You.
  • All three novellas were written and edited in 2012 & 2013. Therefore I did not have any editing costs in the month of January 2014. However, in the sake of transparency, the editing cost for all three novellas was $600, or $200 per novella.
  • I packaged the novellas together and published it on 21 January 2014. I do all of my own formatting with a program called Scrivener, which I have owned since 2011. Therefore I did not have any formatting costs for the month of January 2014.
  • The cover for FALLING FOR HIM is a modification of the existing #3 novella cover. I use a program called Pixelmator to create my covers. I purchased Pixelmater in 2013. No costs were incurred for the cover in the month of January 2014.
  • On January 21, 2014, I filed and submitted the combined Falling For Him series with the copyright office. Price: $35.00.

2)   The Queen Of Scarred Hearts (#2, Reclaimed Souls) (Jean 8. Aeglothecca)

  • This is the second book/novella in my YA/Fantasy/Science Fiction Series called Reclaimed Souls.
  • The first book, The Pale Waters (#1, Reclaimed Souls) was published in November 2013.
  • The entire series (meaning, all FOUR books in the Reclaimed Series) was written and edited in 2013. Therefore I did not have editing costs in the month of January 2014. However, for the sake of transparency, the total editing costs for all four books was $1,300, or $325* per book. * Cost for editing was higher than the Falling For Him series because Reclaimed Souls was much longer, and editing normally is calculated using the word-count for the manuscript.
  • The covers for all four books were purchased (licensed) from in September 2013. Therefore I did not have cover costs in the month of January 2014. However, for the sake of transparency, covers cost approximately $30, or $7.50 per image. I may be off a little bit in terms of what it costs since on, the customer (me) purchases “credits” and then uses those credits toward licensing images. I recall that the images I chose for the Reclaimed Souls series were less than 10 credits each. So while $7.50 seems low, I can almost promise you that each cover cost less than $10 to license.
  • On January 19, 2014, I filed and submitted The Queen of Scarred Hearts with the copyright office. Price: $35.00.

Okay, now that you know that I incurred costs, you’ll need to know that I made one of my books FREE starting the last week of January and this had unexpected results for me. I made FALLING FOR YOU, (#1, Novella of the Falling For Him Series) Free. Within a few days I was #4 in the Gay Romance genre on Amazon. It shocked me! I have no doubt that this lead to many customers purchasing Novellas #2 and #3, as well as the entire Falling For Him Series bundle (the bundle was priced LOWER than if a customer had purchased each book individually). (Note: as I write this, Falling For You (#1) is currently # 29 in Amazon’s Kindle/EBook Gay Romance category.) <pause while I do cartwheels!!>

Based on numbers and my fuzzy math skills, I would estimate that of those that downloaded the free novella, approximately 5% went on to purchase #2 novella, and those that purchased #2, almost 75% of those customers purchased #3 novella. These statistics bleed over into February because I didn’t check my sales until the first weekend in February. I’m not a chronic statistic checker. I’ll admit, however, that I’m paying much more attention than I ever have before.

Next, before I get into the stats that I’ve promised you, I want you to know that during the month of January I wrote two short stories for a science fiction and fantasy magazine submission. If purchased, each short story will earn me $360 per short story, or $720 for both. However, I will not know until later this month (February 2014) if the stories will be accepted. For transparency sake, I actually wrote three short stories for this submission, but the last one was written at the beginning of February, so I’ll mention it more in next month’s report, as well as any earnings from them.

I sell across many e-book sellers: Amazon, Smashwords (which distributes to BN, Kobo, Diesel, and iTunes), and All Romance EBooks. All information contained below is directly from the vendors.

(note about the above… seems low, right? Well, I, at some point, unwittingly set #3 also to FREE – probably thinking I was modifying #1, so you’ll see a different story right below this)

Ready For You ($0.00) (set to free) Royalty: 0.00

* The return coincides when I accidentally placed the novella for free. While I do not know for sure, I believe the customer purchased it just before the novella became free, realized a couple of days later it was free and returned the purchased version. Otherwise, I do not see a reason of returning a free ebook. <grin> I should also note that I’m super cool with this. If I went to a store and bought a book and then, the next day I went back in only to realize the same book was either on sale or free, you better believe I’d return the purchased book in order to get the free or reduced priced product. Just saying.

Falling For Him (The Complete Series) ($3.99) Royalty: $54.94

Units Downloaded/Borrowed              Units Returned

26                                                                        6*

* This is a 23% return rate. I haven’t investigated, but I think this may be on the high side for return rates. It alarms me. It could be related to the fact that during the same week, Falling For You and Ready For You were both, at times, Free. I’m not sure. I’ll state that when I purchase an ebook, I rarely return to the scene of the crime (i.e., the book’s page on Amazon) to see if the price is different. In fact, I rarely read the book right away. Hopefully these 6 customers went back to see what else I had for sale and realized two of the three books that they just paid $3.99 for were free. I’m probably reading too much into it, tho. I’ll see if February holds the same % rate of returns. Hopefully it will not.

Sadly, I did not have any sales of my Reclaimed Souls series across any Amazon channel for the month of January.

 Total Amazon US Royalty: $86.69

I’m not going to break down Amazon UK, AUS, DE, or the other countries. Across all titles, I earned $17.94 in the other Amazon stores.

Total Amazon Royalties: $104.63

Smashwords distributes to Kobo, Sony, iTunes, Barnes & Noble, among others. Typically, my sales are much lowers on Smashwords, and January was no different. I won’t break down the titles, but overall I earned $27.29. It appears, however, that I gave away 391 free ebooks. I experimated a little bit with Smashwords on pricing and I did set many of my titles for free for a week or two, to include Falling For Him. I did not see a jump in sales in the non-free titles due to this.

Sometimes, however, Smashwords’ spreadsheets are difficult for me to read. For example, it will list a sale, but it won’t break it down any further, such as delivery fees (authors are responsible for the costs associated with delivering the ebook to your ereader), and the vendor’s cut (anywhere from 30-40%). So, in the “Final Amount Tab”, it is empty and it doesn’t factor when I do the auto-sum. I’ll cut Smashwords slack, however, in that they report it when the vendor reports the sale. So, what I’m seeing in my January report may really be stuff from November, or December. Also, it is very possible that I’m reading it all wrong. That said, I feel comfortable with the $27.29 amount since this is in line with what they pay me quarterly (~$80-90 / 3 months = $26.66-$30.00 per month). However, if the trend I saw in Amazon (where free gained me many new sales) happens, I may not see the numbers reported until next month.

All Romance Ebooks

All Romance Ebooks (ARe) is a new distributor to me. Their uploading system takes a bit of getting used to, but once you’ve got it down, it’s VERY easy to upload all of your titles. I did this with ARe in January 2014 (in fact, the LAST WEEK of January). I have had no other history with ARe, so January is my first month with them, and I am very happy with my sales!

Note: Nothing was set for free on ARe in January.

  • Falling For Him (The complete series) 29 units sold
  • Falling For You (#1) 42 units sold
  • Hungry For You (#2) 9 units sold
  • Ready For You (#3) 8 units sold
  • Ignite Me (An Erotic Short) 24 units sold
  • Military Love (Three Erotic Shorts) 1 unit sold

I sold 113 units at ARe (in one week) for a total Royalty of $98.64. I’ll hint that February is looking very good already.

January 2014 Royalty Earnings

Minus Expenses (copyright filing of $70)

So, there you have it. I earned, after expenses, a grand total of $160.56 for the month of January 2014. However, this doesn’t do you much good unless you knew how much I earned in January 2013… $10.20. Yes… ten dollars and twenty cents. <grin> I’d call that an improvement.

2014 looks good for me. I have several more titles to published and several short stories that, hopefully, will be accepted into science fiction & fantasy magazines. February sales are already looking great and I hope the trend continues. I doubt I’ll ever be Colleen Hoover, Amanda Hocking, Bella Andre, or Addison Moore – whom are great and I’ve read their stuff and enjoyed it and they deserve the sales they’ve earned – but I’ll put my work out there and see if it resonates with anyone. I’ll learn along the way. I’ll take risks. I’ll experiment. I’ll dabble in other genres. The great thing about being my own boss is that I get to call the shots, even if those shots only earn me a few hundred bucks a month. It’s worth it.

The Queen of Scarred Hearts (#2 Reclaimed Souls)

I’m excited to tell you that THE QUEEN OF SCARRED HEARTS is now available! Hold on while I do a few cartwheels!

The Queen of Scarred HeartsIf you haven’t picked up Book/Novella #1, click here to see what you’re missing! TQoSH (I just made that up) is the second book/novella in the Reclaimed Souls Series. The stakes are higher as Rahda leaves Skyscraper City and heads to see the master she’s betrayed. While there, she meets a charismatic man, Dev Osta, who gives Roland a run for his money. Let’s just say that Dev is gorgeous and that all of my beta readers, to include my editor — yes ALL of them — found Dev drool worthy. You’ll want to purchase this book just to get the bonus material at the end. (Shhhh, but it is the unedited version of Rahda and Dev’s, um, encounter). Now, on to TQoSH…

The Queen of Scarred Hearts, #2 (Reclaimed Souls)

A Conflicted Heart…  Caught between two worlds, Rahda must decide what she desires more: to be Lady Rahda Sevradan or the Grandfather’s disciple. Now that she knows that masking the dark prince’s scars was a ruse, she leaves the Palace Skyscraper only to unearth new secrets, including secrets about her family’s history. Then she meets someone that threatens her feelings for Roland. Will her heart and soul ever been in agreement?

A Dark Soul…  Prince Roland Rexus wants nothing more than to keep Rahda close, but she fights him at every turn. He wants a real marriage. He wants her heart. Once she learns of his future plans, he worries he will lose her forever. As the battle brews internally between them, war looms over his head and the dark prince is powerless without Rahda’s help.

A Royal Revolution…  With a royal revolt simmering just under the surface, Rahda and Roland must tread carefully as the continent’s citizens descend upon Skyscraper City for a royal celebration that changes everything. Will the Queen of Scarred Hearts emerge?  You can read an excerpt here. The Queen of Scarred Hearts is available for $3.99. You can buy it now from any one of these e-tailers:
